David Cross playing a chef cooking with green screen on Comedy Bang! Bang!
I loved this bit so much, especially when David was staring at Scott and banging the pan around.
Also, David Cross is one of my favorite people ever. He was the first person I ever heard speak openly about being an Atheist.  It let me know that there were other people like me out there and it was okay to talk about it.  Also he is one of the funniest people in the world.

So last night I went to the Comedy Bang! Bang! show in San Francisco and it was so good I can’t even express it.  First off, as you can tell from this picture, Paul was Cake Boss and James was Huell Howser.  These are the exact two characters I was hoping for and it they did not disappoint.  Without giving anything away, Scott does a bit at the front end of the show that made me so happy I couldn’t stand it.  Then we get stand up from the guests.

I have to say I was blown away by James Adomian, I have obviously seen his stand up before and love his characters on Bang Bang but his set was so tight and well thought out, he really had everything I want from a stand up: a defined voice and great material.  Really he was great, everyone go get his new album Low Hanging Fruit when it comes out in a couple days.

I saw Paul F. Tompkins last time he was around in 2010 and he was the best stand up I have ever seen.  He opens his shows with stream of consciousness material and that is what he did for his entire set last night and I still can not believe how freaking funny he is ALL of the time.  He did what seemed like a pretty long set that was just fun and inventive, it just made me very happy.  At one point he pretended to be an old advertising agent and walked around the stage hunched over for a very long time.  I was sitting in my chair thinking “No, Paul, you are gonna make your back hurt”, and he did but the bit was really worth it.

Then there was the Bang Bang podcast recording itself. I don’t want to say too much about this because you can go buy it and all the other shows from the Earwolf store, and you should.  The only thing I will say is that when Huell Howser comes on stage, Cake Boss is scared scared of him it is quite a awhile before you hear Cake Boss talk but for that entire time Paul was sitting there sneering wearily at James. He never dropped character and I was very impressed.

We stayed around and met the guys after the show and they were all very gracious and funny and real and honestly the interaction couldn’t have left me feeling any happier.

Bang! Bang! (Comedy)

Here is a painting I did of the logo for Comedy Bang! Bang!  If you don’t know what that is, it is one of the funniest podcasts in the world.  Now Comedy Bang! Bang! is also one of the funniest and most inventive TV shows that I have ever seen, it is on IFC Fridays at 10pm if you are interested, which you should be, or if you don’t have IFC you can get a season pass on iTunes right now.  In addition to the podcast and tv show, Comedy Bang! Bang! is a stand-up showcase at the UCB theater in LA.  I went to it once when I was visiting Disneyland and it was truly great.  And lastly Comedy Bang! Bang! is now on tour around the country.  I already got my tickets to go see it in San Francisco and I am extremely excited.  And soon Comedy Bang! Bang! will be opening up their first church.  It’s a religion, you guys!

The host of all the versions is Scott Aukerman, and on the TV show the band leader is Reggie Watts.  I have been attempting to draw Scott over the last couple weeks so I could do this post and he, for some reason, has a very hard face to draw, no matter what I do it always looks a little off.  For instance in this one I couldn’t help but make his eyes too dark.

I can’t even place what I did to make this not quite right but it just feels off to me.

He looks cross-eyed here and he is not.

Regardless go listen to the podcast and watch the show, they both truly are some of my favorite things on this earth.
